In 2015, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta celebrates 100 years of serving Georgia Our story began on Sept. 15, 1915, with 20 hospital beds in two cottages in Decatur, Ga. A century later, we are a top-ranked pediatric healthcare system with three hospitals and more than 850,000 annual patient visits.
Children’s is 100 years strong today thanks to the generosity and support from the community, and on our 100th anniversary, we want to say thanks with a special day that unites us all.
What is Cape Day?
Some superheroes battle scary villains. At Children’s, we’ve had a century of superheroes who have fought something much scarier—accidents and illnesses that create challenges most of us could never imagine. To recognize our 100th anniversary and our superhero patients, Children’s is encouraging communities around Georgia to wear capes on Sept.15, 2015 for Cape Day Part Two: 100 Years Strong.
In fall 2013, Hudson Lillystone’s parents noticed their 3-year-old wasn’t acting like her usual spunky self. Doctors at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center diagnosed her with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The whirlwind, nine-day stay that followed involved port surgery, bone marrow and spinal fluid testing as well as the initial rounds of inpatient chemotherapy.
Hudson faced this first and very trying week with amazing strength, channeling the power and inspiration of her favorite superheroes, Superman and Ironman. When she puts on the blue cape that a family friend made for her, she becomes “Super Hudson.” Like her heroes, Super Hudson also had a faithful sidekick while staying at the Aflac Cancer Center. She named her IV pole—her constant companion in the hospital—Super Bernie and gave him his own black superhero cape.
Hudson has an indomitable spirit that is contagious, and the nurses, doctors and staff enjoyed her spirited presence. Hudson finished her initial round of chemotherapy and will endure a lower-dose maintenance phase, which will last until 2016. For Super Hudson, nothing is impossible—especially with her sidekicks.
How to show your support on Cape Day
Cape Day Part Two will celebrate a century of superheroes just like Super Hudson. The community is invited to wear a cape to show their support for all our patients. Visit choa.org/capedayATL for tips on how to get involved.
- Make a cape: Host a cape-making party at your business, classroom or with your family and friends.
- Buy a cape: Purchase a commemorative Centennial Cape for $20 in honor of our 100th anniversary with proceeds benefiting Children’s. Buy one for yourself or surprise your favorite superhero with his or her very own Centennial Cape. Our goal is to sell 1,000 capes in honor of our 100th anniversary.
- Wear a cape: Show the patients at Children’s you support them by wearing your cape on Sept. 15.
- Host a fundraiser by asking others to donate $5 in order to wear a cape to work or school
- Let employees show off their capes by hosting a parade or walk through the cafeteria or around
the office Sept. 15.
- Show us your cape: Post your own Cape Day photos using #CapeDayATL on social media to show your support for our superhero patients.
