How does the GRHOF help the community? Through programs that give back to our community. The Moonshine Festival is one of the community’s largest fund raisers annually.
The Moonshine Festival has as part of it’s festivities one of the largest car shows in the Eastern US. The car show is located at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, and the festival spreads throughout historic downtown Dawsonville’s welcoming hometown streets. While leisurely walking through hundreds of vintage cars you can hear the sounds of live music that brings back shades of the past. With classic vehicles of all kinds, you will see 50’s cars, race cars, hot rods, dune buggies, vintage trucks, V8 muscle cars, Ford model Ts and model As just to name a few. Dawsonville is notorious for it passion of the cars that ran moonshine up and down Hwy 9.
It’s amazing that this extremely large event today started years ago with one man. His name is Fred Goswick. Fred started the Moonshine Festival originally called the ‘Fall Festival’ (during the leaf looking time of the year in the Northern Georgia Mountains) by just putting an old moonshine still in the middle of historic downtown Dawsonville one weekend. People did not take him seriously, but he did it anyway. Then over time, the festival grew and grew. Tens of thousands of people attend this event annually today. All of the proceeds for the festival at that time also went to provide assistance to local children. The organization that benefited then was called Star Brite.
All of the proceeds from the Moonshine Festival today go to Kare for Kids KARE for Kids, Inc. “Making the World a Brighter Place, One Child at A Time”. KARE’s main focus is providing the opportunity for every child in Dawson County to have a Christmas they deserve. We also provide year-round assistance on a referral basis, assisting with a winter coat, tennis shoes, medical needs or specific items needed for school.
