A native of Dawsonville, GA, Gober Sosebee was another member of the original “Georgia Gang.” Born October 15, 1915, he was believed to be a moonshine tripper, he was among hte first drivers to race strictly stock cars. In 1948, he drove a 1947 Buick in the inaugural Daytona Beach race. He was the most popular driver in NASCAR Sportsman competition in 1950. In 1950 and 51, he scored back-to-back NASCAR Modified victories on Daytona Beach in a car that today is on permanent display at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame. In 1951, he was the first driver to qualify a Cadillac on the pole at a NASCAR event. Sosebee scored two NASCAR Sprint Cup victories in his career, at Augusta, GA on June 1, 1952 and in Macon, GA on April 25, 1954. In 1955, he was the Southern Racing Enterprises series champion. IN 1960, he was the NASCAR Sportsman Track Champion at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, GA, along with being the Georgia State Sportsman Champion. That year, he also received the Autolite Racing award. Known as the “Wild Injun”, Sosebee was the driver’s driver. “Let’s just say I learned how to drive a car the way everybody else did. I run with all them boys up there in the hills. They’re about the best there ever was on the back roads and that makes ’em the best racers, too.” Sosebee passed away on November 11, 1996.
