Randy Couch told his father “I’m gonna be a racer” when he was ten years old. Years later Randy began working part time after school at a service station and took his first step toward that dream. The owner of that station, Gene Mullinax, saw a newspaper ad for a race car for sale. Between the two of them they just barely had enough money and went after the car that day. Gene was to be the driver with Randy as the mechanic. Gene quickly discovered driving wasn’t for him and told Randy to get in the car and this was the beginning of Randy’s driving career.
Randy raced in the Atlanta area during the early to mid 1970’s. In the late 70’s some of the asphalt tracks were either closing down or converting to dirt for one reason or another. Randy and several other Georgia drivers started going to tracks at Montgomery, Huntsville, Birmingham, etc. winning his first pavement race in 1980 at Montgomery. His second win came two weeks later and his whole attitude changed. “Winning is fun” and he went on to win 11 features along with the track championship that year. That was just the beginning for Randy, he started competing with the All Pros Series winning 6 races and two championships in 1981 and 82.
Randy was considered one of the informal “Georgia Gang” along with Jody Ridley, Ronnie Sanders and Billy McGinnis.
