Harold “Speedy” Evans – deceased
The late Harold “Speedy” Evans began his career by working on race cars in a chicken house and went on to build cars for some of the best drivers in North Georgia.
Mr. Evans had a long and distinguished career in Georgia’s racing scene. He was a car builder, engine builder, car owner, chief mechanic, auto body repair man, and tow truck driver. If it had to do with a race car, he could do it, and do it well.
Mr. Evans hand built his cars from the frame up in his shop. From stripping a car down to a bare frame, to bending the tubing for the roll cage, to mounting the body, to painting the car, he did it all.
The list of drivers who drove for Speedy reads like a who’s who of Georgia’s racing drivers. Three GRHOF fame drivers drove his cars and won numerous races in them: Bud Lunsford, Buck Simmons, and Charlie Padgett.
Speedy built and raced Skeeters and Late Models during his time in racing. His cars won races all over North Georgia: Dixie Speedway, Rome Speedway, West Atlanta Raceway, the old “Mountain Racetrack,” to name a few.
