“We were a small family team just trying to race, and for that to happen today would be impossible.” So said Bill Elliott in 2000, by which time he had led that team through 623 races, winning 40, finishing an incredible 25% in the top five and earning nearly $24 million. Born on October 8, 1955, Elliott began his racing career at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA in 1975. “Awesome Bill from Dawsonville” began his NASCAR Sprint Cup career at Rockingham in 1976. In 1981, he captured his first pole at Darlington. He scored his first NASCAR Sprint Cup career victory in 1983 in the season finale at Riverside, and in 1984, would win the first of many Most Popular Driver awards. In 1985, he had arguably the greatest season in NASCAR history with 11 poles, 11 victories, and a $1 million bonus for winning the Daytona 500, the Winston 500 at Talladega and the Southern 500 at Darlington. In 1987, Elliott scored his second career Daytona 500 victory, and set the all qualifying speed record at Talladega, AL. In 1988, with brothers Ernie and Dan in the pits, Ellliott won the Winston Cup Championship. Elliott would see a resurgence driving for Ray Evernham and Dodge in the early 2000s, becoming the first Georgian to win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a Brickyard 400 win. Fearless on the track and humble in victory, Bill Elliott has earned the respect of his peers and the adoration of his fans. “I feel like we’ve done a good job at it, my family and what we have fought through.” In 2015, Elliott joined fellow GRHOF members Tim Flock and Rex White as a member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
